Sexual health topics for gay & trans lads

From STIs and PrEP to erections and testosterone – no question is too embarrassing. If it’s bothering you, it matters.

💊 PrEP

PrEP is a daily tablet that can prevent HIV. It’s available free on the NHS and is highly effective when taken correctly. Not sure if it’s right for you? Come and have a chat with us.

HIV Prevention
🔬 HIV & Living Positively

HIV is not the death sentence it once was. With modern treatment, people living with HIV can have a completely normal life expectancy and be unable to pass the virus on (U=U).

HIV & Treatment
🧫 STIs – What to Know

Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, herpes, HPV — most STIs are easily treatable when caught early, and many have no symptoms at all. Regular testing is the single best thing you can do.

Testing & Treatment
⚡ Erectile Dysfunction

Weaker erections or reduced sex drive — especially in men over 30 — are incredibly common and usually very treatable. Low testosterone, stress, and lifestyle can all play a role. You’re not alone in this.

Men’s Health
🏳️‍⚧️ Trans Health & HRT

HRT, sexual health whilst transitioning, navigating services as a trans person — these are things we can talk through together and point you to the right services.

Trans Wellbeing
🩺 Lumps, Bumps & Changes

Spots, discolouration, or unusual changes to your penis or testicles — always worth getting checked. Most of the time it’s nothing, but catching things early makes a real difference.

Physical Health
🧠 Sexual Health & Mental Health

Anxiety, shame, and low self-esteem can all affect your sex life. Your mental and sexual health are deeply connected — if you’re struggling with either, talking about it is always the right first step.

Wellbeing
🤝 Consent & Healthy Relationships

Navigating new relationships, talking openly with partners about sexual health, and disclosing your HIV status — these are skills every lad deserves support with.

Relationships

Testing is quick, easy & mostly painless

Most tests are done via a simple urine sample or blood test — no uncomfortable swabs needed in most cases.

🧪 Urine Tests

  • Chlamydia – results in around 2 days
  • Gonorrhoea – results in around 2 days
  • No swabs required for these tests
  • Available at a clinic, GP, or via a home kit

🩸 Blood Tests

  • HIV – accurate from 4–6 weeks after exposure
  • Syphilis – detected via blood test
  • Hepatitis B & C
  • Testosterone levels (if concerned about low T)

📦 Home Testing Kits

  • Free HIV home test kits available in many areas
  • SH:24 offer free postal STI test kits online
  • Discreet packaging — tested at home
  • Results via text or online — no waiting rooms

📅 How Often Should I Test?

  • At least once a year if you’re sexually active
  • Every 3 months if you have multiple partners
  • Before and after a new partner
  • After unprotected sex when you’re unsure

Questions lads actually ask

No stupid questions here, lads.

Yes — this is incredibly common and nothing to be ashamed of. From your late 20s onwards, testosterone levels naturally begin to drop slightly. This can affect erection strength, morning wood, and sex drive. Stress, diet, alcohol, lack of sleep, and certain medications can all make it worse. The good news? It’s usually very treatable. A GP can check your hormone levels with a simple blood test and discuss options — from lifestyle changes to medication. Come and have a chat with us and we can point you in the right direction.
The risk of getting HIV from oral sex is extremely low — and in most real-world scenarios, effectively zero. HIV is transmitted primarily through unprotected anal or vaginal sex, sharing needles, or from mother to child. If you’re concerned, using condoms and getting on PrEP are the most effective ways to protect yourself.
PrEP is a daily tablet that prevents HIV infection when taken correctly — it’s over 99% effective. In England, PrEP is available free through NHS sexual health clinics. You don’t need a GP referral — just turn up to your nearest sexual health clinic and ask. It’s also available in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. We can help you find your nearest service.
Changes in skin colour and spots on the penis are usually harmless — things like Fordyce spots and pearly penile papules are very common and completely normal. However, any new sores, ulcers, or unusual changes should always be checked out, as some STIs can present this way. A sexual health clinic is always your best bet for a proper look.
First — don’t panic. Most STIs are easily treated with a short course of antibiotics or antiviral medication. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis are all curable. Herpes and HIV are manageable long-term conditions. Your sexual health clinic will advise on treatment and support you through the process. You’re not alone — and it doesn’t define you.
You absolutely deserve respectful, affirming healthcare — and you have the right to it. Most NHS sexual health clinics are trained to treat trans patients with dignity. If you’ve had a difficult experience or are unsure where to go, we can help you find trans-friendly services in your area. Organisations like CliniQ in London specifically support trans and non-binary people’s sexual health needs.

Violence & abuse can happen to any lad 🆘

Domestic abuse, verbal abuse, sexual violence, and coercive control affect men too. It’s not weakness to reach out.
